Defending Champions Upset Olympic Champions At Patria Direct Open

The 2010 international Beach Volleyball season has not been the best of times for Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal of the United States, but the defending champions at this week’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour posted a pair of back-to-back victories in the winner’s bracket here Thursday for the first-time to lead the field into the next rounds of competition.
With the SWATCH FIVB World Tour returning to the Czech Republic capital for the first-time since 2008, Gibb and Rosenthal extended their Prague winning streak to eight-straight matches by defeating pairs from Russia and the United States at the US$190,000 Patria Direct Open on a side court at the Štvanice Stadium on the River Vitava.
Seeded 17th in the 32-team double-elimination Main Draw in the sixth of 14 men’s events on the SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar this season , Gibb and Rosenthal’s second win Thursday was over top-seeded American rivals Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers in the 49th domestic and/or international meeting between the two teams since May 2006.
After opening with a 21-12 and 21-14 win in 37 minutes over 16th-seeded Serguei Prokopiev and Yury Bogatov of Russia, Gibb and Rosenthal advanced with seven other unbeaten teams to the third-round of the winner’s bracket with a 21-14 and 23-21 win in 46 minutes over the top-seeded and reigning Olympic Dalhausser and Rogers.  The series between the Americans now stands at 38-11 for Dalhausser and Rogers, including a 6-4 edge in FIVB matches.
“We have really been struggling this year,” said the 34-year old Gibb, who teamed with Rosenthal to place fifth at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  “The big difference today was Sean’s serving along with our ability to side out effectively.  Any times you beat Phil and Todd, you have posted a great win.  This should really help our confidence, but tomorrow we face more tough teams starting with the Poles.”
Gibb and Rosenthal, who captured the 2008 Patria Direct Open title by winning six matches with a 21-13 and 23-21 gold medal win over Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann of Germany, have not placed higher than ninth in their last nine SWATCH FIVB World Tour starts.  The Americans placed ninth in the Russian Grand Slam last week after being eliminated by Dalhausser and Rogers 21-14 and 21-8 in Moscow.
Eighth-seeded Grzegorz Fijalek and Mariusz Prudel of Poland will be Gibb and Rosenthal’s first opponent Friday with the victorious team advancing to quarter-final match later in the afternoon against fifth-seeded Penggen Wu/Linyin Xu of China or 13th-seeded Pedro Cunha/Thiago Santos Barbosa of Brazil.   Gibb and Rosenthal defeated the Poles earlier this year in a three-set match in Shanghai.
“This season has been tough with all the travel,” said 29-year old Rosenthal.   “The good thing is that we are 8-0 in Prague.  We love the city, we love the people, we love the food and we especially love the facility.  Today’s two wins were really important for us mentally as we had not been playing well lately.”
While the wins by the Poles and Chinese were expected due to their seedings as Wu and Xu captured their country’s first men’s FIVB Beach Volleyball gold medal this past Monday by defeating Dalhausser and Rogers in the three-set Moscow finale.  The second victory by Cunha and Thiago was a 21-13 and 21-19 in 36 minutes over fourth-seeded Adrian Gavira and Pablo Herrera of Spain.
To open play in the lower half of the Winner’s bracket Friday, second-seeded Alison Cerutti/Emanuel Rego of Brazil and third-seeded Julius Brink/Jonas Reckermann of Germany will be challenged by seventh-seeded Reinder Nummerdor/Richard Shuil of The Netherlands and 27th-seeded Igor Kolodinsky/Yaroslav Koshkarev of Russia respectively.  Koshkarev is a replacement for Kolodinsky’s regular partner Dmitri Barsouk, who is out with shoulder problems.  The Russians defeated the 11th- and sixth-seeded teams Thursday.
Sixteen other teams remain in the double-elimination tournament, including Dalhausser/Rogers and Gavira/Herrera.  Following Friday’s 22-match schedule, Saturday’s play will be highlighted by the semi-finals with the medal matches Sunday where the gold medal winning team will share the $30,000 first-place prize.

China’s Xue & Zhang Net Second Moscow Grand Slam Women’s Gold Medal

For the 10th-time in the 19-year history of the women’s SWATCH FIVB World Tour teams from China and the United States competed against each other for an international Beach Volleyball gold medal with two of the confrontations being on the Poklonnaya Gora (Victory Park) in the Russian capital.
And for the second-time in three years, eighth-seeded Chen Xue and Xi Zhang topped the women’s podium in Moscow by capturing the gold medal at the US$600,000 Grand Slam presented by SEAT by defeating second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross of the United States 21-17 and 21-19 in the 41-minute final.  Both of China’s gold medal victories against the Americans have been in Moscow by Chen and Zhang.
In winning their fifth SWATCH FIVB World Tour title, the 21-year old Xue and 25-year old Zhang shared the $43,500 first-place prize as the Chinese topped an international Beach Volleyball podium for the first-time since defeating Americans Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs in the 2008 Moscow finale.

USA and China to meet in Montreux Volley Masters final

USA will meet China in the final of the Montreux Volley Masters after the two sides beat Cuba and Russia respectively on the penultimate day of the women’s competition in Switzerland on Saturday.
USA took advantage of a number of Cuba mistakes on the way to a 3-0 win in the day’s first semifinal. Following some solid defense in the first set, USA went to work on disrupting the Cuban offense. Cuba eventually lost patience to let the second and third set slip from its grasp and with that, a place in the finals.
China marked its return to the tournament by beating Russia 3-1 in the semifinal to book a meeting with USA. The Russians, led by powerful duo Goncharova and Kosheleva easily won the first set before China clinched the second. The third set also went China’s way however the fourth almost fell to Russia following some sublime attacking. However the wall of Chinese blockers was too much and they fell at the final hurdle.
The two sides will now meet on Sunday to decide the winner of the 2010 Monteux Volley Masters.

Turkish star Emre Batur looks confidently towards second round robin in Italy

After three magnificent matches played in front of the home audience that culminated in a stellar 3:0 against Italy this past Sunday, Turkey’s star Emre Batur was one of the guests of “Turkiye Online Show” hosted by Kaan on MaxFm 95.8.
As he is preparing with his mates for the return round robin to be played this coming weekend in Gioia del Colle (Italy) Emre stated: “We had a training camp of 3 weeks with our new head coach Veljko Basic. Basic is a great coach. We enjoyed a great start in our campaign for the next European Championship and now we have great expectations. We played our matches in Ankara’s Baskent sports hall in front of great fans. We all thank them for their loud support. We will be leaving for the second round in Italy soon. We believe we are going to qualify as the group leader”.

Rookie Dinamo KRASNODAR finished third in Russian league and qualifies for next European Cups season

Rookie Dinamo KRASNODAR clipped bronze in the Russian Super league and Azeri star Natalya Mammadova stood out as the best scorer of Playoffs series. Being a debutant of the Russian Super league, Dinamo finished third defeating legendary Uralochka EKATERINBURG 3-1 in the series “best of five”.
Before playing Uralochka, Dinamo KRANOSDAR had outclassed Omichka OMSK, which had ended the regular season in third position, finishing 2-1 the series played with the formula “best of three”. After having lost their main setter for injury, Dinamo was outclassed in the first match with Omichka 0:3. In the second the girls of Dinamo defeated Omichka 3-2 and the best scorer of that match was Azeri leader and captain Natalya Mammadova with 36 points. In the last match played at Omichka`s home, Dinamo once again showed a brilliant performance with 34 points scored by Mammadova and a solid paly of Anna Makarova. Dinamo blocked the opponent team 32 times in that match. So KRASNODAR qualified for the semi-final round where they lost to Zarechie ODINTSOVO and then started the marathon for bronze against Uralochka EKATERINBURG. In the first match Uralochka defeated Dinamo Krasnodar 3:0. But Dinamo defeated Uralochka in the next three matches in a row, every time with the same result (3:0) and finally claimed the bronze medal of the Russian Super league.
Azerbaijani star Natalya Mammadova once again was the best scorer of the Russian league. Having already topped the charts in the regular season, Natalya Mammadova booked 203 points in 10 matches of the Playoffs round. Winning bronze in the national league, Dinamo KRASNODAR historically qualified for the next European Cups season and will most probably compete in the CEV Cup.

Cuba looks towards Leon for World League glory

Cuba included 16-year-old star Wilfredo Leon in their FIVB World League squad when it was announced last week, and the side, who finished fourth in last year’s competition, will be hoping the young player will continue his scintillating form throughout the tournament.

Leon, who was the best server and third top-scorer at last year’s competition, has already taken part in the NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental Championship this year, and will be competing at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14-26 prior to the World League in a true test of stamina.

Cuba open their campaign at home against Argentina before facing off against Germany and Poland in Pool D.

The 21st edition of the FIVB World League takes place from June 4-July 25, with the final round taking place in Cordoba, Argentina.

Mexico and USA advance to semi finals in NORCECA Girls’ Youth Champs

Defending champions USA and NORCECA No.1 ranked Mexico qualified for the semifinals of the NORCECA Girls’ Youth Championship as pool winners with the best points-ratio on Thursday as the battle continues for a place at the first Youth Olympic Games in Singapore from August 14-26 and the 2011 FIVB Girl’s Youth World Championship in Turkey.
The champions from NORCECA will represent the region at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games later this year with the top three teams qualifying for the Youth World Championships. Puerto Rico will play Costa Rica, the best second placed team, in the quarterfinals while the Dominican Republic face hosts Guatemala. Mexico and USA qualified directly for the semifinals with points-ratios of 2.344 and 2.250 respectively.
USA v. Canada
Defending champions USA advanced to the semifinals after recording a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) victory over Canada. The U.S. beat Canada in both the blocking category (11-0) and service winners (5-2) with Mallory McCage claiming 11 points, including four blocks, to top the scores.
“Tonight we played our most inconsistent match,” USA Coach Jim Stone said following the victory. “I am glad we are moving on but we need to play better in the upcoming matches. We need to raise the level of play.”
Puerto Rico v. Guatemala
Puerto Rico overcame Guatemala in straight sets (25-19, 25-16, 25-11) to win Pool B but failed to move directly to the semifinals as their points-ratio was 1.984, less than Mexico and USA.
After a slow start, the Puerto Ricans made adjustments and dictated the pace of the game with their offense and advantage at the net. Daly Santana and Pilar Victoria were the top scorers with 11 and 10 points respectively for the victors, with Lucia Castro scoring eight. Leticia Alarcon won seven points for Guatemala.
“Guatemala was a tough rival but we improved our game after the first set,” Puerto Rico’s Santana said. “I think we still have room to improve in our blocking.”
Mexico v. Costa Rica
Mexico finished at the top of Pool A after a straight sets victory over Costa Rica (25-9, 25-10, 25-11).
The Mexicans used their potent spikes, a good floor defense and the performance and leadership of setter Alicia Castro to guide them into the semifinals. Samantha Bricio was the only Mexican in double figures with 22 points. Castro added seven points including six aces and Gabriela Zazueta claimed another seven points all through spikes.
