The volleyball competition at the 10th All Africa Games in Maputo concluded with great success, with more than 100 different media from the 50 participating countries covering the event in Maxaquene Hall in the Mozambique capital of Maputo.
A number of European media outlets such as the BBC and Radio France Internationale RFI covered the event along with more then 200 newspapers throughout the continent and major press agencies like Reuters, AFP and dpa.
The men of Cameroon and the women of Algeria were the stars who attracted most of the media attention after they picked up the gold medals.
In Cameroon, the media regarded the victory as a historic moment for the sport, especially as Cameroon's Minister of Sports and Physical Education Zoah Michel attended the event.
The Algerian women team regained their position as queens of Africa only two weeks after they lost their African Nations Championship title in Nairobi to hosts Kenya, who finished third at the All Africa Games.
Cameroon team captain Jean Ndaki and Algerian women's captain Fatima Zahra were named the best players after both played key roles in their countries' victories.
Ndaki, who also impressed at the World Championship in Italy last year, played a very important part in motivating his colleagues as well as with his razor sharp spikes particularly in the final against Algeria and the five-setter against Kenya in the semifinals.
Algerian setter Fatima Zahra was the leader of her team not only with her skillful combinations, but also with the spirit that she played game, extracting maximum power from her colleagues. The captain, who started playing for the national side when she was only 15, earned another gold to go with previous golds from the 2007 All Africa Games, the 2008 African Olympic Qualification tournament and the 2009 African Nations Championship.
What made the men's and women's finals even more interesting was the fact that they both pitted Algeria against Cameroon and it was great to see the women players of both countries staying behind to support the men in a fantastic carnival of volleyball in front of a big crowd.
