Bulgaria’s boys celebrate Balkan Youth gold in Kazanlak

Bulgaria’s national youth boys’ team was crowned Balkan Champion on home ground in Kazanlak this past weekend after dethroning Serbia in the final match with a convincing 3:1 (25-14, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23). Bulgaria had previously sailed through the preliminaries, without losing a single set against the teams of Romania, Montenegro and Macedonia. In the semifinal clash with Turkey, the Bulgarians had also secured the match in three straight (25-13, 25-18, 25-15).
Serbia had also taken three victories in Pool A against the teams of Greece, Albania and Turkey. In a tough semifinal battle with Montenegro, the “Plavi” came out on top 3:1 (20-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-18) to face the home team in the final.
Fans from all over the peninsula came to the Valley of Roses in Central Bulgaria to fill up the stands of the “Arsenal” competition hall for the big match and the two teams made sure the enthusiastic spectators were in for some spectacular volleyball. Some brilliant performances from the boys of Bulgarian head coach, legendary Nikolay Zhelyazkov, gave a two-set lead to the home team, but then Serbia battled back to win the third set and take a 23:21 lead in the fourth. It seemed that the powerful spikes of Uros Kovacevic would take the match into a tie-break, but the hosts didn’t think so. A kill block by Ventsislav Trifonov and brilliant attacks of Nikolay Penchev and Plamen Dragiev put an end to the battle.
In the bronze medal match played earlier in the day, Montenegro defeated Turkey 3:0 (25-19, 28-26, 25-15).
In an official awarding ceremony, Bulgarian Volleyball Federation Executive Director Mr. Stanislav Nikolov, VC Kazanlak President Deko Grigorov and BVA Technical Delegate Simon Dzines (F.Y.R. of Macedonia) presented cups and medals to the top three teams of Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro and also to the individual honorees. For a second year in a row, young Bulgarian talent Nikolay Penchev was selected as MVP of the Balkan Championship.
