Cuba recorded a spectacular five-set comeback victory over the United States to take a major step toward finishing first in Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.
In Pool A, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico remained unbeaten following their wins over Trinidad & Tobago and Canada, respectively, on Wednesday. The teams will clash on Thursday for group supremacy, while Cuba meets Mexico.
Wilma Salas scored six of her 14 points in the tie-breaker to help Cuba complete a sensational come-from-behind win over the USA and stake a 2-0 record in Pool B. The score was 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-10.
The Cubans outmatched their opponents 14-7 in the blocking category and came out victorious despite committing 44 errors compared to 21 by the losers, who now have a 1-1 mark.
Nancy Carrillo, who closed the match with an ace, led Cuba with 23 points including 5 blocks. Kenia Carcaces added 17 and Yanelis Santos contributed 4 blocks among her 16 tallies. Americans Nancy Metcalf and Jordan Larson had 16 and 14 points respectively.
