Beach Volleyball - CEV Challenger and Satellite

Thomas Kaczmarek/Stefan Schneider of Germany clipped yesterday the very first CEV Satellite tournament staged in Ukraine’s capital city, Kiev, after a tense final match against local heroes and favorites Mykola Babich/Oleksandr Ioisher.
Babich/Ioisher had qualified for the final match after having cruised past Switzerland’s Sutter/Chevalier in the first semifinal (21-16, 21-12). The second semifinal, starring Kaczmarek/Schneider against Belgian duo Coucke/Frankart was even more exciting with the teams trailing point after point. However, the Germans performed extremely well in the final section of both sets to advance to the final match after a straight victory (21-19, 21-19).
With Coucke/Frankart having claimed the bronze medal after a real battle against the Swiss duo that ended 16-14 in the third set, time had finally come for the final showcase featuring the home heroes and an emerging German pair. Kaczmarek/Schneider displayed all their power, especially in blocking, creating a gap of 7 points in the opening set, and with that pressure on their shoulders, the Ukrainians could not storm back (21-14). In the second set, Ioisher started playing with more consistency and confidence, so the score stayed extremely close up to the provisional 12:11. The match had to be stopped at this point because of a thunderstorm and after that break, the Germans re-gained their best momentum to finish their job in two straight sets (21-14, 21-17).
The Awarding Ceremony was attended by a representative of the Ukrainian Presidency who had significantly supported the organization of this Satellite event in Kiev.
