What an impressive and marvelous scenario did welcome this morning Europe’s Beach Volleyball elite in front of the O2 World in Berlin! With some segments of the Berlin Wall still standing not that far away from the playing area, a magnificent Beach Volleyball stadium – together with a few side courts – will be the vibrant heart up to next Sunday for what is definitely this year’s major competition in Beach Volleyball.
The local organizers did a stellar job as they prepared first-class facilities – or we should actually say a real Beach Volleyball village - for this elite tournament, featuring also a series of attractions for kids and for all those that want to combine the classy actions to be seen on court with a relaxing day, walking around and going for some fun.
The Beach Volleyball tournament is being staged right in front of the O2 World, a multi-functional indoor arena – actually one of the best across Europe – which normally serves as the home base of the ice hockey team based in Germany’s capital city that claimed the last edition of the national league. However, this time the O2 World will be hosting Europe’s best pairs as they vie for the continental crown. Their dressing rooms as well as some additional facilities – such as an imposing press centre – are all located in the arena and it takes only a short walk to make it to the stadium and enjoy the actions that did open this morning the operations here in Berlin.
The local heroines, such as 2008 European champions Goller/Ludwig are certainly the major force to contend with along the way to the final matches scheduled for Saturday and they actually opened their campaign on a high note for the delight of some fans that did immediately resume to the venue. Goller/Ludwig indeed cruised very quickly past Sweden’s Nilsson/Hansson in straight sets (21:13, 21:11) and Germany did also have another victory to celebrate during the morning session as emerging Köhler/Sude seized their first match against Vasina/Khomyakova of Russia. Another pre-favorite pair, Austria’s Montagnolli/Hansel – who recently stood out also in the latest stops of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour – did live up to the initial expectations as they needed only 34 minutes to outclass Slovakia’s Michalovicova/Cizmarova (21-9, 21-19). Last year’s bronze medalists, Kuhn/Zumkehr of Switzerland, were even quicker for their debut against Rehackova/Vorlova from the Czech Republic, with a double 21-12 in 29 minutes of play.
It did not take that long here in Berlin to witness a major upset, as Latvia’s defending European champions Minusa/Jursone lost their opening game against Cella/Rosso from Italy. Inguna and Inese did not have a brilliant season so far and even though the door is still completely open, they will find it hard to make another statement after last year they very surprisingly claimed the crown on the banks of the Black Sea.
For all those who would love to follow up as closely as possible the operations here in Berlin, the local organizers are providing a live ticker which is regularly available under this link: http://tour.eurobeachtour.com/asticker/liveticker.html
