Quite a few teams are still undefeated after the first competition day at the 2010 CEV U18 European Championships to be played until Sunday on the “Edificio Transparente” beach in Porto, an event organized by the Portuguese Volleyball Federation in cooperation with the Porto City Hall, through PortoLazer.
The list of the teams that walked confidently through the first round of play in the women’s division includes Anna Behlen/Anika Krebs (GER) and Soria Gutierrez/Maria Martinez (ESP) in Pool A, Konstantina Vlachaki/Anna Spanou (GRE) in Pool B, Ágata Lewica/Karolina Baran (POL) in Pool C, Karen Gluck/Yael Lotan from Israel in Pool D together with Marzena Kedzior/Katarzyna Kociolek (POL) and Katharina Schützenhöfer/Lena Plesiutschnig (AUT) in Pool E.
In the men’s division Christoph Dressler/Lorenz Petutschnig (AUT) in Pool B, Oliver Cizmazia/Martin Bilik (SVK) and Artem Korovka/Maxim Zhirkov (RUS) in Pool C, Tobias Winter/Lorenz Koiramann (AUT) and Nicola Tiozzo/Gregorio Vanin (ITA) in Pool D, Lukasz Kaczmarek/Sebastian Kaczmarek (POL) and Midas Snoek/Jeffrey van Wijk (NED) in E, along with Daniels Natrins/Reinis Pekmanis (LAT) and Viacheslav Kirienko/Vasili Andrianov (RUS) from Pool F are all still unbeaten.
Regarding the teams of the hosting country, the highlight of the day is to be deserved to Ana Rita Brandao and Eduarda Duarte, players who are also regular members of the indoor national team that debuted today in the European Championships and straight away with a sweaty, but fair triumph (24-22, 25-23). “I’m still shaking” confessed Ana Rita, after defeating Ieva Tetere/Alise Lece from Latvia. The second match didn’t go that well and the hosts were defeated by the French team Clarisse Bourguignon/Lorette Watrin 0:2 (16-25 and 23-25).
Marina Filipe Alexandre and Joana Neto followed their steps in Pool F and defeated the team from Austria consisting of Elisabeth Steiner and Rosalinda Seidl 2:0 (21-17 and 21-15). In their second match, they repeated the same result (2:0, 21-15 and 21-8), this time against Norwegians Kristine Hjembo and Alicia Wennberg. “We always said that we had great expectations regarding this event, after in the last year we reached the 13th place. Maybe we couldn’t expect to qualify in this, I wouldn’t say, easy way, but less complicated. We are happy with our game and tomorrow (against Laura Delli Quadri and Maria Graniero [ITA]) we will see what happens”, concluded Mariana.
