World Championship wait nearly over

The 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship is now just a few days away with all 24 teams going through the final touches of their preparations ahead of Volleyball’s premier tournament.
With matches set to take place across Italy from September 25 through to October 10, fans around the world are eagerly waiting for Saturday to arrive, and with a total of 36 matches taking place within the first three days of the tournament the event promises to be a Volleyball feast.
Defending champions Brazil come into the tournament as one of the favourites. The side has been almost untouchable in the last few years and are coming off the back of a record ninth FIVB World League title. However, Russia are not far behind, and with many smaller nations looking to make a name for themselves there will be no room for error for any of the big sides.
Pool A includes hosts Italy, Japan, Egypt and Iran in an even looking group. The home side will be hoping they can carry over their performance from the World League which saw them win nine matches in the preliminary rounds, but Japan and Egypt will aim to use their recent momentum in continental tournaments to boost their chances.
Pool B will offer a mouth-watering clash as World no.1 Brazil face off with the young, dynamic Cuba. They are joined by Spain who have performed well in Europe recently and Tunisia in Verona.
Pool C see’s 2010 FIVB World League runners-up Russia play Puerto Rico, who have regular experience against solid sides such as the USA and Cuba, Australia and Cameroon in Modena.
Pool D is an all-American affair with Argentina and Venezuela representing South America and Argentina Mexico and Olympic Champions USA representing North America in what promises to be a tight group in Reggio Calabria in the south of the country.
China will have to face off against some of Europe’s finest in Pool E as they play France, the Czech Republic and the always impressive Bulgaria, who will be seething after narrowly missing out on a Final Round place at this year’s FIVB World League. All four teams will be playing in Torino.
Finally, Serbia, Poland, Germany and Canada will battle it out in Pool F in Trieste. Poland and Germany have already played each other numerous times this year and with all matches being close, it is likely to be a nail-biting group, especially alongside the likes of 2010 World League bronze medallists Serbia.
The 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship promises to be a breathless affair from the off, and with three days of solid Volleyball action, players will not be the only ones looking forward to the mid-week rest, fans will too.
