Lube Banca Marche MACERATA scored this afternoon a second win in the semis of the 2011 GM Capital Challenge Cup against EA PATRON Lux, this time in straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-23), to vie for the crown in the final where the Italians will play Arkas IZMIR of Turkey. Lube Banca Marche will try to add another trophy to its impressive tally, comprising the 2002 CEV Champions League as well as the 2001, 2005 and 2006 editions of the CEV Cup. This will be the sixth European final for MACERATA in the last ten years, with the GM Capital Challenge Cup being the only Cup still missing in their showcase.
Lube Banca Marche totally dominated the match with EA PATRON Lux displaying one of the best performances so far in this season, especially in the first and second sets. EA PATRON Lux suffered a major setback right after the start of the game, when the score stood at 2:4, as Brazilian spiker Daivison Ferreira Da Silva injured his ankle and was hence substituted by Anastasios Aspiotis. MACERATA was quickly able to set the pace (17:11) with great serves, including 3 aces, that totally destroyed the Greek defense, ad blocks. Serbian middle-blockers Dragan Stankovic and Marko Podrascanin were really outstanding and scored 5 and 6 points respectively in the opening set. The many problems EA PATRON were having in reception paved the way for the Italians also in the second set. As MACERATA went up 16:12 by the second technical break, coach Mauro Berruto decided to opt for some of his reserve players with Belgian opposite Gert van Walle replacing captain Igor Omrcen and young spiker Lampariello for Cristian Savani. The second set finished with another 25-16, with Matteo Martino contributing 5 points (80% in attack).
EA PATRON attempted a comeback in the third set, moving up 13:8, but then MACERATA clawed back for the 16 all and Podrascanin stamped a block for two match balls at 24:22. Martino and van Walle were the real hammers in attack and MACERATA could stamp the final 25-23 and secure a spot for the final. Martino, Stankovic and Podrascanin topped the charts of the best scorers with 11 points apiece, the same haul claimed by the Brazilian opposite of EA PATRON, Pedro Dornelas.
Coach Mauro Berruto commented: “We are very happy for this qualification, because the final of the 2011 GM Capital Challenge Cup was one of the most important targets in our season. We won all the matches we have played in the competition until now, so it means we didn’t make it to the final just by chance. Today we played good Volleyball, especially in serving and blocking, as we already did in the first match in Greece. I hope we’ll continue this way also in the finals because now we really want to win this trophy”.
The mentor of EA PATRON Lux, Georgios Christopoulos, added: “In the third set we had the chance to re-open the match, but we made a lot of errors, so MACERATA could come back and win. Lube Banca Marche is a very strong team and I am not surprised that they qualified to the final”.
