Sanne Keizer and Marleen van Iersel celebrated today the greatest result of their career as the Dutch duo topped the final standings of the SWATCH FIVB World Tour tournament held in Shanghai.
The “Oranjes”, who were seeded as nr 7 there, first defeated the Austrian sisters Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger in the semifinals (21-15, 21-19) and then crossed their ways with the 2009 World champions, Kessy/Ross from the United States.
The first set was totally dominated by the Americans (21-15); Keizer and van Iersel got a margin of 3 points in the opening of the second set and they actually maintained that lead almost all the way through before Kessy/Ross cut the gap and went for a thrilling final rush. April Ross missed a diagonal attack as the score stood at 25:24 for the Dutch girls who could therefore go for the tie-break. There Keizer and van Iersel set the pace (9:7, 12:7 and 14:10) but had to cope with a late comeback of the Americans who almost leveled the count (14:13) before Sanne Keizer could complete the next side-out and bring home the first win in the SWATCH FIVB World Tour.
