FIVB launches heroes campaign in Rome with two outstanding role models

This morning, at Foro Italico, the FIVB launched the “FIVB Heroes” campaign, just two hours before the start of the first knock-out-matches at the 2011 FIVB SWATCH Beach Volleyball World Championships. “Our mission is to bring the spectacular sport of Volleyball to the world," emphasised FIVB President Jizhong Wei. “Last year, a total of 1.65 billion TV viewers watched the Beach Volleyball World Tour. Our sport is one of the world's fastest-growing”.
The International Volleyball Federation recently has started a re-branding project, including a new corporate logo, as well as a new events look and feel. The new PR campaign is a core element of the project. President Wei adds: “We are asking our top athletes in both variants – Beach Volleyball and Volleyball – to get into the spotlight, to further promote Volleyball as a highly athletic and highly professional sport, played around the globe with a strong brand in the background. This is what we are aiming for. No one can tell the story of our sport better than the athletes themselves. They are perfect role models – powerful, creative, expressive and dynamic”.
In total 13 men and 16 women from 6 countries were selected as “FIVB Beach Volleyball Heroes”. Another 28 indoor Volleyball athletes will be presented with this accolade during the World League final tournament in Gdansk, Poland (6-10 July). Only players that have won “best player” awards at FIVB events or, in the case of Beach Volleyball, have won recent World Tour events, were chosen to be part of the campaign. Priority was given to younger players who will be able to continue their careers for additional three or four years.
Photo and high-speed film shootings took place in Montreux, Gstaad, Tokyo and Rome. Super-slow-motion scenes bring out the best in both the game and the physical excellence of the athletes. Thirty-second TV commercials and event posters have also been produced. “Raise your expectations” emphasises Maria Clara Salgado Rufino. “It’s not how big you are, it’s how big you play” was the sound bite from the US team of Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser.
Two of the most successful players of all time were present at the launch: double Olympic and triple world champion Kerri Walsh (USA) and Olympic gold medallist and double world champion Emanuel Rego (BRA). Two giant statues of Walsh and Rego – each four metres high – were presented before the start of the ceremony in Rome.
“I am happy to be part of the campaign. It will help create more role models for future generations of players and a platform for stars” said Walsh. Rego continued: “It is our privilege to play the World Championships at Foro Italico this week and next year the Olympics at Horse Guards Parade in London – two of the most beautiful and iconic sports sites in the world. For us, these are two huge opportunities to perform in front of millions of TV viewers”.
