Η Φενερμαχτσέ αντίπαλος του ΑΡΗ Μαρμούρη!

Μετά από έναν συγκλονιστικό δεύτερο ημιτελικό, η Φενερμπαχτσέ ήταν αυτή που πήρε το εισιτήριο για τον τελικό της Κυριακής, αφού νίκησε στον δεύτερο ημιτελικό την Παρτιζάν με 1-3 σετ (27-25, 27-29, 22-25, 14-25). Έτσι, ο ΑΡΗΣ Μαρμούρης θ΄ αντιμετωπίσει στον μεγάλο τελικό της Κυριακής, ο οποίος θα ξεκινήσει στις 19:00 την ομάδα της Τουρκίας, ενώ η Παρτιζάν θα τεθεί αντιμέτωπη με την Όντζακ στον μικρό τελικό για το χάλκινο μετάλλιο.

Στον αγωνιστικό τομέα, οι Τούρκοι μπήκαν πιο χαλαρά στο παρκέ, γεγονός που εκμεταλλεύτηκαν οι παίκτες της Παρτιζάν, με αποτέλεσμα να «χτυπήσουν» στα ίσια το παιχνίδια. Όμως, στο τέταρτο σετ οι Σέρβοι έμειναν από δυνάμεις και στην αντίπερα όχθη το σύνολο της Φενερμπαχτσέ ανέβασε στροφές, φτάνοντας τελικά στην πρόκριση.

Πρώτοι σκόρερ από πλευράς των νικητών ήταν ο Λούκας Ντίβις με 21 πόντους και ο Τομισλαβ Τσόσκοβιτς με 20, ενώ στην αντίπερα όχθη ξεχώρισε ο Μιχαήλοβιτς.

Cuba scores spectacular comeback win over USA

Cuba recorded a spectacular five-set comeback victory over the United States to take a major step toward finishing first in Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.
In Pool A, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico remained unbeaten following their wins over Trinidad & Tobago and Canada, respectively, on Wednesday. The teams will clash on Thursday for group supremacy, while Cuba meets Mexico.
Wilma Salas scored six of her 14 points in the tie-breaker to help Cuba complete a sensational come-from-behind win over the USA and stake a 2-0 record in Pool B. The score was 19-25, 16-25, 25-16, 28-26, 15-10.
The Cubans outmatched their opponents 14-7 in the blocking category and came out victorious despite committing 44 errors compared to 21 by the losers, who now have a 1-1 mark.
Nancy Carrillo, who closed the match with an ace, led Cuba with 23 points including 5 blocks. Kenia Carcaces added 17 and Yanelis Santos contributed 4 blocks among her 16 tallies. Americans Nancy Metcalf and Jordan Larson had 16 and 14 points respectively.

Cuba, USA, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico off to winning starts

Defending champions Cuba, United States, Dominican Republic and hosts Puerto Rico opened the NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship with victories at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum on Tuesday.
The winner of the biennial competition will earn a berth at the FIVB Grand Champions Cup next November in Japan.
Cuba needed four sets to defeat Costa Rica, while USA, Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico enjoyed straight-set wins over Mexico, Canada and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively.
The Cubans recorded a 3-1 (25-14, 25-10, 22-25, 25-20) victory over the Costa Ricans in the second match of Pool B. It was the first time in history that Costa Rica took a set from Cuba.
Yusidey Silie and Kenia Carcaces each compiled 17 points for Cuba with Silie recording 4 blocks and 3 aces. Wilma Salas contributed 15 and Giselle Silva charted 11 tallies. Verania and Angela Willis had 12 and 9 points respectively for Costa Rica.
Cuba outscored Costa Rica 10-3 in blocks and 13-9 in aces but gave away 33 points to errors compared to 20 by the losers.
USA scored a straight-sets 25-18, 25-10, 25-13 victory over a young team from Mexico in the opening match of Pool B.
Nancy Metcalf and Cynthia Barboza led USA with 11 and 10 points and Jordan Larson tallied 9 points. Olivia Meza and Cecilia Rios each had 8 points for Mexico.
The bigger Americans erased a two-point deficit at 15-13 in the first set and never looked back. They dominated 6-1 in serving aces and 5-1 in blocks.
Dominican Republic defeated Canada in consecutive frames by a score of 25-20, 25-22, 25-20 in the first Pool A match.
Prisilla Rivera and Milagros Cabral topped the Dominican offense with 15 and 12 points respectively and Lisvel Eve and Altagracia Mambru added 9 and 8. Tammy Mahon and Tiffany Dodds charted 15 and 11 points for Canada.
Puerto Rico capped the opening day with a 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 win over Trinidad & Tobago in front of around 2,500 fans.
Puerto Rico blanked its opponent 7-0 in the aces category and also took advantage of 33 errors made by Trinidad & Tobago.
Sarai Alvarez led Puerto Rico with 14 points, followed by Tatiana Encarnacion and Aurea Cruz with 8 and 7 respectively. Kelly-Anne Billingy had 10 points for the losers and Krystle Esdelle contributed 9 tallies.

Eight teams to square off in NORCECA Women’s Continental

Eight teams will be competing in the biennial NORCECA Women’s Continental Tournament for regional bragging rights and the single ticket available to the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup in Japan in November.

The event will take place at Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum of Bayamon, Puerto Rico through September 22-27.

World No. 5 and defending champions Cuba will play in Pool A alongside World No. 2 USA, Mexico (26th) and Costa Rica (30th). Hosts Puerto Rico (18th), Dominican Republic (14th), Canada (23rd) and Trinidad & Tobago (53rd) comprise Pool B.

Cuba has won 13 of the 20 editions of the competition but USA, winner of five titles, has emerged as the main powerhouse of the continental event, claiming three of the past four championships. Mexico won the first two tournaments.

The pool play runs through September 22-24 with the winner of each group advancing directly to the semifinal round. The second and third place teams then will play crossed matches in the quarterfinals (September 25).

Four matches are scheduled to start at 14:00 (local time) daily, with Puerto Rico always playing from 20:00. All of Puerto Rico’s matches and those for the medals will be broadcast nationally by TeleSports Channel 13. Matches can be seen “on demand” via www.mediasports.tv

Pool A

Cuba, winner of the 2007 tournament and runner-up at the previous three events, features Nancy Carrillo and Kenia Carcaces, setters Yanelis Santos and Yusidei Silie, and a new source of power from the tandem of Wilma Salas and Yoana Palacios.

The U.S. roster includes a highly talented group of veteran Olympians, with Danielle Scott-Arruda, Heather Bown, Logan Tom, Nancy Metcalf, Lindsey Berg, Cynthia Barboza and Stacey Sykora. Young guns such as Kristin Richards, Alexis Crimes and Jordan Larson will also make the trip. The Americans finished second in 2007 and were runners-up in the five editions that preceded their threepeat in 2001, 2003 and 2005.

Mexico won the tournament back in 1969 and 1971 but last finished among the top three with third-place finishes in 1979 and 1981.

Youngsters Marta Revuelta, Cecilia Rios and Xitlali Herrera are joined by veteran Claudia Rodriguez to form the core of the team.

Costa Rica, which defeated México last month to qualify for the 2010 World Championship, strongly relies on siblings Verania and Angela Willis and Karen Cope Charles.

Pool B

The Dominican Republic, third-place finisher in the past four editions and five of the last six, will rely on powerful hitters Bethania de la Cruz and Prisilla Rivera and support from veteran Milagros Cabral. Brenda Castillo is building a solid reputation as libero, while Annerys Vargas and Lisvel Eve are capable defenders at the net.

Playing with the support of the home crowd, Puerto Rico will depend mostly on the offense of Aury Cruz and Sarai Alvarez, while Vilmarie Mojica is a reliable setter. Sheila Ocasio and Alexandra Oquendo provide solid blocking.

Canada’s top guns are Tiffany Dodds and Tammy Mahon but Sherline Holness and Tonya Mokelki are also offensive threats. The last time the North Americans finished on the podium was in 1999, with a third-place finish.

Trinidad & Tobago is a team with enormous raw physical talent, and Krystle Esdelle and Kelly-Anne Billingy are the heavy hitters of the squad.

2009 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships

Playing the first two of three main draw pool play matches Thursday, the world’s best young adult men’s beach volleyball teams continue to illuminate the sand at the 2009 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships, for players under 21 years old. The ninth edition of this world championship event is being held in England for the second straight year and the first in Blackpool.
Pool Play will finish on Friday when the 24 men’s main draw teams play their final pool play match after which the field will be reduced to 16 to begin the single elimination final phase of the event on Saturday.
With the 24 teams divided into six pools, winning their first two matches Thursday were seven teams--the Netherlands, Germany, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada, Poland, and Switzerland. While the others lead their pools outright, the teams from the Netherlands and Switzerland are tied with two wins each.


The event, which is free to the public, continues through Sunday at St. Chads Headland on the South Promenade in Blackpool. In Great Britain for this week’s world championship event for both men and women are a total of 69 two-person beach teams (36 men, 33 women) representing 29 nations. The gold medal and bronze medal matches for both genders will be played on Sunday.
Netherland’s Alexander Brouwer/Christiaan Varenhorst, who won the silver medal in last year’s junior world championships in Brighton, England, defeated teams from the Netherlands and Latvia, Germany’s Lars Fluggen/Stefan Kohler, second-seeded, won their matches over teams from Brazil and Austria while New Zealand’s Sam Wallace-Boyd/Sam O’Dea, seeded 16th, won over opponents from the United States and Russia.
Brazil, which has two teams in the men’s Main Draw along with Germany, Poland and the Netherlands, saw 12th-seeded Alvaro Filho/Vitor Gonsalves win twice, over teams from Spain and Germany. Canada’s 7th-seeded Steve Marshall/Sam Schachter are 2-0 with wins over duos from Norway and Great Britain.
The other two teams undefeated after the first day of main draw pool play are Poland’s eighth-seeded Michal Kadziola/Jakub Szalankiewicz who recorded their wins over teams from Australia and Japan along with 10th-seeded Jonas Kissling/Mats Kovatsch of Switzerland with wins over tandems from Latvia and the Netherlands.


With 20 teams pre-seeded into the main draw and the top qualifiers earning the final four slots, Great Britain has three teams in the main draw.
As the host nation, Great Britain has three men’s teams in the main draw: Seain Cook/Adam Smith, Patrick Crooks/Chris Gregory and Josh Randall/Jake Scheaf. Cook/Smith and Crooks/Gregory are in the same pool and they played each other in Thursday’s opener with Cook/Smith winning in three sets, 20-22, 21-8 and 15-10 in 54 minutes, the longest men’s match of the tournament so far.
Randall and Scheaf lost both of their matches Thursday as did Crooks/Gregory but with a victory in their final matches on Friday, however, the possibility remains that they could advance to Saturday’s elimination rounds. Cook/Smith could also advance, depending on how they do in their final match.
In all, there are 18 countries represented in the men’s main draw.
The 2009 SWATCH FIVB Junior World Championships are being produced by Beach Volleyball UK Ltd. of Dorset in association with Britain’s Northwest Regional Development Agency and Volleyball England.
Lying along the coast of the Irish Sea, Blackpool, England’s major seaside resort, is 40 miles (64 km) northwest of Manchester and less than 30 miles north of Liverpool City centre.

POLAND vs. FRANCE ("Turkey EVC 2009 FINAL")

Poland fly to first gold medal in history

26 years after their silver medal in East Berlin, Poland clinched gold at the 2009 CEV Men’s European Championships in Izmir. The East Europeans overpowered France 3:1 (29-27, 25-21, 16-25, 26-24). Bulgaria took bronze, outclassing 2005 and 2007 runner-up Russia in straight sets (25-18, 26-24, 25-21).


In presence of CEV President Mr. André Meyer, the President of the Turkish Volleyball Federation Mr. Erol Ünal Karabiyik as well as several international and national authorities, France made a blistering start and their pace was too much for Poland in the early stages of the 2009 CEV European Championships final encounter, leading 6-4, and 8-7 at the first technical timeout. The Polish machine began to go to work slowly, but there was no stopping the gentle ace from Romain Vadeleux that sailed through the Polish court, 10-7. Daniel Castellani asked for a break to give his boys some tactical hints. On the restart, Poland fought back quickly, with Gruszka spiking dominant on the right. At the second technical timeout, the Poles came closer, 15-16. Some moments later, French head coach Philippe Blain brought in Edouard Rowlandson for Guillaume Samica, but Polish Daniel Plinski served two aces in a row to move Poland ahead, 22-19. France fought back bravely to level the game at 22-22, then at 26-26 and 27-27. But the Poles kept the upper hand with Bartosz Kurek flying high from back row, 29-27!
France jumped out for an early 12-9 lead in the second set with Stéphane Antiga and Samica firing some missiles through the Polish block, but Poland didn’t let loose to bounce back to 12-12. Michal Bakiewicz took the East Europeans into the second technical timeout with a two-point lead, 16-14, and at 14-18, Blain called a timeout to restructure their offensive and defensive patterns. The French now completely lost their rhythm, especially in reception, and the Poles moved forward to 21-15. Antiga countered a first Polish set ball at 19-24 with a clever block out shot, but two rallies later Gruska finished it on the right, 25-21 and 2-0 Poland.
The French were finding their momentum again in the third period, and when Vadeleux served another winner for 8-4, the Poles needed the technical break to regain control. Some brilliant French defenses caused Poland to overreact and fire wildly into the French block. With errors on serve reception and attack, Poland trailed 7-16 (!) at the second technical timeout. The set was now over as a contest for the Poles, and France moved on quickly, 20-11. Michal Ruciak gave “les bleus” a first set ball with a poor serve at 16-24, and Kurek sent it wide one rally later to hand over France the third set with little resistance.
With Polish Gruszka (16 points) and French Rouzier (18) and Samica (16) on fire, both teams exchanged some exciting combinations in the beginning of the fourth set. Poland moved ahead quicker, 8-5 at the first technical timeout. But the French stayed focused to level the game again at 12-12. French captain Olivier Kieffer hammered one through the middle, and his opponent Marcin Mozdzonek did the same one rally later, 17-17. The Poles put a lot of pressure on the French attackers, and when Samica sent it wide, Poland regained command at 19-17. At 20-21, Rouzier took too much risk from back row, but two rallies later, he compensated it with a scorching winner, 22-22, and then 23-23. Plinski brought up match point through the middle, but Rouzier saved one on the right. 2009 Men’s European Championships Most Valuable player Gruszka fired another missile to give Poland a second match point at 25-24, and closed it out again one rally later to bounce the Polish team and more than 2,000 thrilled Polish supporters in heaven.

Earlier today, Bulgaria started the bronze medal match in dazzling style, with super star Matey Kaziyski present at the net, and setter Andrey Zhekov distributing the balls fast and precisely. Russian head coach Daniele Bagnoli called a timeout at 9-13, but Russia was still trailing four points at the second technical timeout. The Russians acted far away from their top level; on the other hand Bulgarians were ready to fight resolutely for their fourth possible bronze medal in history (after 1955, 1981 as well as 1983).
Bulgaria still proved too strong for the clumsy Russians in set No. 2. Vladimir Nikolov blocked for a 16-10 Bulgarian lead at the second technical timeout. However, the Russian bear was still alive; closing the gap to one point at 19-20. Some moments later, Russian Volkov leveled to 22-22 with a power block in the middle, forcing Bulgarian head coach Silvano Prandi to ask for another short break. The set now balanced on a knife’s edge until 24-25, before Bulgarian Nikolov closed it out with an ace, 2-0.
As during their semifinal against France, the Russians reached their full working temperature in the third set, and led 8-4 in the first as well as 16-13 in the second technical timeout. Prandi tried to reorganize the Bulgarian way of play at 16-19, and apparently it worked as the Bulgarians turned around the score in their favor, 20-19. Kaziyski moved the scoreboard to 22-10 with a blistering winner from the left. Some moments later, he reappeared on the right to fire another rocket through the Russian defense to bring up three Bulgarian match points. The Bulgarians kept cool and ended it with a block kill, 25-21, to celebrate their fourth bronze medal in history.

“This moment will stay forever in Bulgarian memories”, said head coach Silvano Prandi. “I thank the Bulgarian federation, but especially the players who made a great job during the last month. They improved a lot in blocking and attacking, I’m very proud.”
“It’s the first medal for Bulgaria in such a big competition”, added Bulgarian captain Vladimir Nikolov. “We are so happy about that. Our coach did a lot of work, thank you very much.”

Το τέταρτο χάλκινο μετάλλιο της ιστορίας της (1955, 1981, 1983 τα υπόλοιπα) σε Ευρωπαϊκό Πρωτάθλημα κατέκτησε το απόγευμα της Κυριακής στο γήπεδο «Αλκαπινάρ» της Σμύρνης η Βουλγαρία, μετά την επιβλητική επικράτησή της απέναντι στη Ρωσία με 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 25-21) στον μικρό τελικό. Από 14 πόντους για τους νικητές είχαν οι Αλεξίεφ και Καζίσκι, ενώ σχεδόν αλάνθαστος ήταν ο Γιοσίφοφ. Οι Ρώσοι διέψευσαν όλες τις προσδοκίες και τις προβλέψεις, καθώς ταξίδεψαν στην Τουρκία ως το αδιαμφισβήτητο φαβορί για το χρυσό μετάλλιο (ήταν αήττητοι στα έξι παιχνίδια της α΄ και της β΄ φάσης), τελικά όμως δεν έμειναν μόνο εκτός τελικού, αλλά και εκτός βάθρου.

Russia, Bulgaria and Poland are the first three teams to qualify for Saturday’s 2009 CEV Men’s European Championships semifinals in Izmir. In Pool E, France, Greece as well as Germany kept their hopes alive for the fourth semifinal ticket. In the duel of the day, France overpowered Greece 3:1.


When Max Günthör blocked for a 25-20 German set win in the fourth set against 2007 defending champions Spain, the Germans experienced their second victory in a row in the Playoff Pool E. However, the German winning streak presumably started too late, as they initiated the Playoff Round with the minimum of points. Anyway, their performance today raises the hopes for a bright future with some young talents flying high. Spanish head coach Julio Velasco tried to neutralize German star Jochen Schöps as well as Björn Andrae from the beginning, consequently other German players as captain Robert Kromm (10 points), György Grozer (12) and second setter Simon Tischer assumed their responsibilities. For the Spaniards, the 2009 CEV Men’s Championships will certainly not be a success story. Until today, the Spanish team just overcame Slovenia as well as Slovakia, whilst they lost against Greece, Poland and Germany. “We didn’t play as a team”, said Velasco at the press conference.



Italy led 20-13 in the first set against Pool F leader Russia, but didn’t close it out (23-25). “We started very well today, but as always, we made too many mistakes in the crucial phases of the game”, said Italian head coach Andrea Anastasi after the match. The Italians did some good work in the middle, but their power hitters as well as their reception were not up to the mark. On the other hand, the Russians didn’t need to extravagate to take their 5th victory in a row, thus qualifying for Saturday’s semifinals in Izmir. Russian captain Sergey Tetyukhin stated: “The first set was very difficult. We made too many mistakes. But we learned to overcome the difficulties as a team. That’s why we’re very happy to have won.” Russian head coach Daniele Bagnoli added: “I think our game wasn’t excellent but good enough. In some aspects of the game Italy were playing even better than us. But our secret was definitely our service.”

Poland started focused in the fifth set against Slovakia. Marcin Mozdzonek blocked for a 3:1 Polish lead, but the Slovakians didn’t let loose to bounce back turning around the score at 6:4. Both teams showed some brilliant offensive combinations at the net, and were quick in defense. Poland switched courts with a one-point lead at 8-7, but undid some good work with risky serves and imprecise attacks. Head coach Daniel Castellani called a timeout at 8-10, giving his boys some time to rearrange their game plan. It helped as Mozdzonek was on duty at the net some rallies later, 12-10 Poland. But the match was not yet over, 13-13, then 14-14. After 104 minutes, the Poles seized their second match ball with Piotr Gruszka hammering the ball in the Slovakian block and from there out of bounds. It was the fifth Polish victory in a row, whilst the unlucky Slovakians lost their third game in tiebreak. Polish captain and setter Pawel Zaugummy explained: “The Slovakians played very well today; we didn’t manage to stop them at the net.” “There were many ups and downs in this match”, said head coach Castellani. “The last two games, we were more nervous as usually, but we still stayed focused. I’m very happy that we made it to the semifinals.”

In the top game of Pool F in Istanbul, the Netherlands tried to seize their last chance for a semifinal spot. But even when the Dutch played on a high level, the Bulgarians proved too strong today. After a 1-0 set lead for Bulgaria, the “Oranjes” started to play better, taking command in the second set at 8-3 and 16-13. Nevertheless, the Bulgarians fought back bravely to overpower their opponents in the end (26-24). The Dutch continued to put a lot of pressure on the Bulgarian defense in the third period. Led by Robert Horstink (20 points), the Netherlands closed out the third set in their favor. However, it was not enough. The team of head coach Silvano Prandi kept cool in the hot moments of set No. 4, when both teams went from 22-22 to 26-26 to finally admit another Bulgarian victory (28-26). Bulgarian’s captain Vladimir Nikolov: “I’m very happy. Today was our most difficult game, because we knew we would go forward. The pressure was huge. Also the Dutch team played very well, their reception and defence worked very well.” Bulgarian head coach Silvano Prandi added: “It was an important victory for us; we deserve to qualify for the semifinals. It’s like a dream.”

In the most important duel in Pool E, France defeated Greece 3:1 Wednesday night in Izmir. The French controlled the game during the first, third and fourth set, whilst the Greeks had their best moments in the second period. Thus, France advance to the top favorites for the last semifinal spot in Pool E, but possibly need another victory Thursday against Spain to make their dreams come true.

In the evening session in Istanbul, Serbia overran Finland in straight sets.

FIVB / WOMEN’S WORLD TOUR OPEN BARCELONA 8-13 SEPTEMBER 2009 (SPAIN)

Σήμερα Τετάρτη 9 Σεπτεμβρίου, αναχώρησε στις 08.40 από το Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος η Εθνική ομάδα Beach Volley Γυναικών (Βίκυ Αρβανίτη-Μαρία Τσιαρτσιάνη) με προορισμό την μαγευτική Βαρκελώνη.

Η Εθνική Ομάδα θα λάβει μέρος σε ένα ακόμη Τουρνουά, του FIVB WOMEN’S WORLD TOUR OPEN, που αυτή τη φορά θα φιλοξενηθεί στην Plaza Carles Bulgas, μπροστά στο Μουσείο Εθνικής Τέχνης της Καταλονίας.

Το FIVB Hyundai Women’s Barcelona Open, θα μοιράσει συνολικά έπαθλα 190.000 $, ενώ η 1η θέση θα αποφέρει στις νικήτριες το ποσό των 30.000 $.

Στο τουρνουά που ξεκίνησε εχθές με αγώνες κατάταξης θα αγωνιστούν 54 ομάδες από 21 χώρες . Η Ελληνική Εθνική Ομάδα θα ξεκινήσει τους αγώνες, την Πέμπτη 10 Σεπτεμβρίου, με σύστημα διπλού αποκλεισμού και στόχο να παραμείνει μέσα στις 10 πρώτες θέσεις της Παγκόσμιας κατάταξης.

Την Ελληνική Ομάδα θα συνοδεύει ο βοηθός του Παναγιώτη Ζακυνθινού, Θανάσης Πανούσος.

Βουλγαρία - Ιταλία 3-0

Η Βουλγαρία μετά την Σερβία διέλυσε και την Ιταλία με 3-0 (26-24, 25-22, 25-22) στον Δ΄ όμιλο. Με πλουραλισμό στην επίθεση κατάφερε να κάμψει την αντίσταση της «σκουάντρα ατζούρα» και έκανε το δύο στα δύο στον πιο δύσκολο όμιλο του 26ου Ευρωπαϊκού Πρωταθλήματος βόλεϊ ανδρών, που γίνεται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη. Κορυφαίοι της Βουλγαρίας ήταν για άλλη μια φορά ο «πατρινός» Αντρέι Ζέκοφ και ο Ματέι Καζίνσκι.
Η ομάδα του Σιλβάνο Πράντι μπορεί να είχε σε άσχημη μέρα τον Βλαντιμίρ Νικόλοφ (9/30 επιθέσεις) ωστόσο είχε βοήθεια από το κέντρο, αφού το δίδυμο Τσβετάνοφ και Γιοσίφοφ κατόρθωσε να κερδίσει τους διπλάσιου πόντους από τον διαγώνιο της ομάδας.

Θρίαμβος της Εθνικής επί της Ισπανίας

Ιστορική νίκη επί της πρωταθλήτριας Ευρώπης του 2007 Ισπανίας σημείωσε η Εθνική ανδρών στον πρώτο της αγώνα στο 26ο Ευρωπαϊκό πρωτάθλημα. Η ελληνική ομάδα έκανε μια από τις καλύτερες εμφανίσεις των τελευταίων ετών και νίκησε την Ισπανία 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-21) σε 74΄. Πρόκειται για το πλέον ιδανικό ξεκίνημα του εθνικού συγκροτήματος στην κορυφαία ευρωπαϊκή διοργάνωση που της φέρνει στα πόδια την πρόκριση στην 12αδα.

Με βασικό πασαδόρο τον Κώστας Προύσαλη, καλή τακτική στο μπλοκ και το σερβίς αλλά κυρίως εξαιρετική άμυνα η ελληνική ομάδα είχε τον πλήρη έλεγχο απέναντι στους Ισπανούς που μετά την απώλεια του 1ου σετ έκαναν λάθη και έπαιξαν δεύτερο ρόλο μπροστά στα μάτια του ανήμπορου να αντιδράσει Χούλιο Βελάσκο. Είναι χαρακτηριστικό ότι στα μισά του 3ου σετ ο κορυφαίος Γκιγιέρμο Φαλάσκα (διαγώνιος) έγινε αλλαγή με τον Μπάρκαλα.

Ολοι οι παίκτες του Δημήτρη Καζάζη έπιασαν υψηλού επιπέδου απόδοση και ειδικά ο Κώστας Προύσαλης τον οποίο εμπιστεύτηκε βασικό πασαδόρο. Οι Χριστοφιδέλης και Μπάεφ θύμισαν τον παλιό καλό εαυτό τους, ενώ ο Πανταλέων πήρε 4 ατομικές μονομαχίες με τον Τόρες και τον Μιγκέλ Φαλάσκα (σε πλασέ) που έκριναν πολλά στη ροή του παιχνιδιού. Ο Νίκος Ρουμελιώτης πυροβολούσε πίσω από τα τρία μέτρα αλλά και το σερβίς. Αλάνθαστος ο Σμαραγδής, ενώ ο Παπαδημητρίου σφουγγάρισε το τερέν βγάζοντας απίθανες άμυνες.

Στο 1ο σετ η ελληνική ομάδα προηγήθηκε 2-0, οι Ισπανοί με τα σερβίς του Γκιγιέρμο Φαλάσκα πέρασε μπροστά 8-7. Ο Προύσαλης με το φλότινγκ σέρβις τίναξε στον αέρα την ισπανική υποδοχή και με σερί 7-0 έκανε το σκορ 14-8. Σταδιακά οι Ισπανοί με τον Γκιλιέρμο Φαλάσκα μείωσαν τη διαφορά σε 21-19 και 23-21, όμως, με δύο επιθέσεις του Ρουμελιώτη τελείωσε το σετ.

Η κατάκτηση του 1ου σετ γέμισε αυτοπεποίθηση την ελληνική ομάδα που μπήκε το ίδιο δυνατά και στο 2ο σετ όπου προηγήθηκε 6-3. Μετά από λάθη στην ελληνική υποδοχή οι Ισπανοί πέρασαν για τελευταία φορά μπροστά με 9-7. Από εκεί άρχισε η τελική αντεπίθεση. Το 9-9 έγινε 11-11 κι από εκεί 14-11. Η διαφορά των τριών πόντων κρατήθηκε μέχρι το τέλος του σετ καθώς οι Ελληνες παίκτες δεν έκαναν λάθη και έβγαζαν εκπληκτικές άμυνες. Ο Βελάσκο δεν τόλμησε να κάνει αλλαγή τον εκνευρισμένο Μιγκέλ Φαλάσκα, ενώ οι αλλαγές που επιχείρησε δεν έφεραν αποτέλεσμα. Το ελληνικό μπλοκ κέρδισε μεγάλες μάχες, ενώ ο Μπάεφ και ο Χριστοφιδέλης πυροβολούσαν από την πίσω ζώνη. Δείγμα του εκνευρισμού των Ισπανών τα 5 χαμένα σερβίς που έδωσαν ξεκούραστους πόντους στην ελληνική ομάδα.

Μετά το 2-0 σετ όλοι περίμεναν την αντίδραση της Ισπανίας η οποία μπήκε δυνατά στο 3ο σετ και προηγήθηκε 8-7. Και πάλι μετά το τεχνικό τάιμ άουτ η ηρεμία και η καλή τακτική της ελληνικής ομάδας έκανε τη διαφορά. Ο Πανταλέων πήρε κρίσιμες μονομαχίες στο φιλέ, ενώ ο Ρουμελιώτης με τον Μπάεφ ανέβασαν στροφές στο σερβίς κάνοντας το 14-11. Ο Προύσαλης με επίθεση συντήρησε τη διαφορά στο 19-15 κι από εκεί και πέρα οι Ελληνες παίκτες εκμεταλεύτηκαν τις ευκαιρίες για να τελειώσουν τον αγώνα παίρνοντας μια πολύ μεγάλη νίκη.

"Καθάρισαν" Ρώσοι και Πολωνοί, νίκη-θρίλερ για τους Βούλγαρους

Η Εσθονία αιφνιδίασε τη Ρωσία και απέσπασε το πρώτο σετ, όμως στη συνέχεια οι παίκτες του Μπανιόλι συνήλθαν και δεν άφησαν περιθώριο αμφισβήτησης της ανωτερότητάς τους, νικώντας με 3-1 στον εναρκτήριο αγώνα του Β' ομίλου. Η "αρκούδα" πήρε 9 πόντους από άσους, αλλά και 16 από το μπλοκ της. Δεύτερος διαιτητής του αγώνα ήταν ο Έλληνας, Αλέξανδρος Βαρθαλίτης.

Στον εναρκτήριο αγώνα του Α' ομίλου, που φιλοξενείται στη Σμύρνη, η Πολωνία, με τον πασαδόρο του Παναθηναϊκού, Πάβελ Ζαγκούμνι στην σύνθεσή της, επικράτησε της Γαλλίας με 3-1 και με το "καλημέρα" έθεσε υποψηφιότητα για την κατάληψη της πρώτης θέσης στον όμιλο. Οι νικητές πήραν 18 πόντους από το μπλοκ, ενώ για τους "τρικολόρ" αγωνίστηκε και ο ακραίος του Παναθηναϊκού, Γκιγιόμ Σαμικά, ο οποίος σημείωσε 8 πόντους.

Ο αρχηγός και πασαδόρος της Πολωνίας Πάβελ Ζαγκούμνι που τη νέα σεζόν θα αγωνίζεται στον Παναθηναϊκό δήλωσε: "Στόχος μας είναι να μπούμε στην 4άδα και με τη Γαλλία κάναμε το πρώτο βήμα. Πιστεύω ότι μπορούμε να τον πετύχουμε, αν και μας λείπουν τρεις βασικοί παίκτες, οι τρεις ακραίοι. Οι αντικαταστάτες τους είναι νεαροί, αλλά ταλαντούχοι. Μπορούμε. Ήταν δύσκολο το ματς με τη Γαλλία, όπως και κάθε πρεμιέρα".

Για τον ερχομό του στην Ελλάδα είπε: "Είδα τους νέους συμπαίκτες μου στο ξενοδοχείο, αλλά δεν είπαμε και πολλά. Θα τα πούμε κατά τη διάρκεια του τουρνουά και ελπίζω να μείνετε και στην επόμενη φάση. Mε τον Σαμικά μιλήσαμε πριν έρθουμε στην Τουρκία, αλλά και στο ξενοδοχείο. Είναι καλός παίκτης και πιστεύω ότι θα κατακτήσουμε το πρωτάθλημα. Σήμερα είχαμε και τις μονομαχίες μας. Του έκανα 2-3 μπλοκ νομίζω. Ξέρω ότι ο σημαντικός αντίπαλος του Παναθηναϊκού είναι ο Ολυμπιακός κι ότι φοράει κόκκινο χρώμα. Χαίρομαι που θα αγωνιστώ στην Ελλάδα και μακάρι και η Εθνική Ελλάδας να πάει καλά σε αυτό το Ευρωπαϊκό πρωτάθλημα".

Ο προπονητής της Γαλλίας, Φιλίπ Μπλέν, δήλωσε: "Δυστυχώς οι απουσίες μας πήγαν πίσω και μας κόστισαν. Μετά το 1ο σετ χάσαμε το ρυθμό μας. Θα προσπαθήσουμε να παίξουμε καλύτερα στη συνέχεια".

Ο Αργεντινός προπονητής της Πολωνίας, Ντανιέλ Καστελάνι, είπε: "Αιφνιδιαστήκαμε από τις αλλαγές της Γαλλίας και χάσαμε το 1ο σετ. Μετά προσαρμόσαμε το παιχνίδι μας, είχαμε καλή τακτική στο μπλοκ και πήραμε μια σπουδαία νίκη. Η συνέχεια θα είναι πολύ δύσκολη, αλλά δεν κρύβουμε ότι θέλουμε τρεις νίκες στον όμιλο".

Σε ένα συγκλονιστικό παιχνίδι για τον Δ' όμιλο, που διεξάγεται στην Κωνσταντινούπολη, η Βουλγαρία νίκησε στο τάι μπρέικ τη Σερβία στο βαλκανικό ντέρμπι. Από τους πρωταγωνιστές των νικητών ήταν ο πασαδόρος της ΕΑ Πατρών, Αντρέι Ζέκοφ, ο οποίος μοίρασε εξαιρετικά το παιχνίδι, ενώ από τους ηττημένους διακρίθηκε, ως συνήθως, ο διαγώνιος του Ολυμπιακού, Ιβάν Μίλκοβιτς.

Ο "Ιβάν ο τρομερός" είχε 33 επιτυχημένες επιθέσεις σε 56 προσπάθειες, ενώ ο Κοβάτσεβιτς του Άρη πέτυχε 9 πόντους. Μεγάλο όπλο των Βούλγαρων ήταν το μπλοκ, που τους απέφερε 18 πόντους.

Για τους νικητές αγωνίστηκε ελάχιστα ο πασαδόρος του Ολυμπιακού, Σιμόν Τίσερ, ενώ ο πρώην ακραίος του Παναθηναϊκού, Μπιέρν Αντράε, ήταν από τους πρωταγωνιστές των Γερμανών. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί πως οι Τούρκοι πήραν αρκετά σφυρίγματα υπέρ τους από τους δύο διαιτητές της αναμέτρησης.

Λαχτάρισαν οι Γερμανοί για να νικήσουν 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 30-32, 15-13) την μαχητική Τουρκία που είχε στο πλευρό της 6.000 οπαδούς της. Με βασικό πασαδόρο τον Βέμπελ αντί του «ερυθρόλευκου» Τίσερ (μπήκε αλλαγή στα δύο πρώτα σετ) και κορυφαίους τον πρώην «πράσινο» Αντρέ και τον Σβάρτζ η ομάδα του Ραούλ Λοζανό πήρε την πολύτιμη νίκη για τον Α΄ όμιλο. Οι Τούρκοι υστέρησαν στο μπλοκ, είχαν τη βοήθεια της διαιτησίας και στο τέλος έχασαν από δικά τους λάθη.

Bulgaria defeats Serbia, Germany overcomes host Turkey in tiebreak

Host Turkey opened the 26th edition of the CEV Men’s European Championships in Izmir in front of 4,300 excited fans with a 2:3 defeat against Germany. In the match of the day in Istanbul, Bulgaria overcame Serbia in a dazzling five-setter. Russia (3-1 against Estonia), Poland (3:1 versus France), Spain (straight-set victory over Slovenia) as well as the Netherlands (3:2 against Finland) were the other winners of day 1 at the 2009 CEV Men’s European Championships in Turkey.

4,300 thrilled Turkish supporters were in a rush of joy when their local heroes leveled the game to 24-24 in the first set of the second duel of Pool A between host Turkey and favorite Germany. However, German super star Jochen Schöps kept cool when he hammered a missile cross court towards the Turkish defenders. As the Turks undid their catch-up race with a simple passing mistake, the Germans took the first set after some moments of tremble. But Turks never give up, and even when the Germans controlled the main phase of set No. 2, it was not enough. The Turks turned around the score in their favor, 25-23, with Volkan Güc closing it out with a blistering winner from back row. Nevertheless, the Germans were the better and perhaps luckier team overall tonight with a strong collective, Schöps and Schwarz on fire, and a well-timed offensive play. Even the enthusiastic Turkish fans couldn’t stop the German stars and the end of the third and fifth set, when first Sebastian Schwarz ended it through the middle with a smart offensive combination, and in the deciding set, when Björn Andrae seized the sixth German match ball with a scorching winner from the left, 15-13. Tonight, Turkey fought bravely whilst Germany got off cheaply.

In the duel of the day in Istanbul between Serbia and Bulgaria, Serbian spikers were flying high in the beginning, reaching the second technical timeout 16-12 in front. The Serbs set the pace, Bulgaria couldn’t follow (21-25). But Bulgaria didn’t let loose, catching set 2 and 4, to close things out in the decider. The fifth set started with an overall good game-play from the Bulgarian side; an early 1-4 forced Serbian head coach Igor Kolakovic using his first timeout to solve the problems in defence. Teams switched courts with an 8-4 Bulgarian lead. Serbia fought back to 8-9 making less mistakes, but the Bulgarian block was finally too strong to overcome, bouncing the Bulgarians into heaven. Serbian Ivan Miljkovic was the best scorer with 35 points.
“I am very happy to win today”, said Bulgarian captain Vladimir Nikolov. “We outplayed one of the best teams in the world. About 40 days ago the Serbian team played the final of the World League, this game was very important for us.”
“I would like to congratulate Bulgaria, they played really well”, replied Serbian captain Nikola Grbic. “At the beginning of the 4th set we had a chance when the score was 22-21 but we weren’t able to take advantage of it. I hope we’ll play better tomorrow otherwise we have to pack our bags and go home.”

In the opening game of the 26th edition of the Men’s European Championships, defending champion Spain overpowered Slovenia in straight sets. The Spaniards proved too strong for the less experienced Slovenians in the first duel of Pool C in Izmir. Whilst Spanish head coach Julio Velasco was “very happy, winning the difficult first match is always very important”, Slovenian head coach Gregor Hribar saw “too many problems in my team, especially with my opposite players. We need to do much better.” Spanish Guillermo was the top scorer of the game with 20 points.

When French super star Stéphane Antiga blocked for a 25-18 first set win against Poland in Pool A, the French players switched courts with a bunch of self confidence. In fact, the first set was very balanced until 12-12, but inexplicably the Polish express stopped when France raised the pace in the middle of the set. However, the Poles bounced back strongly in the second set, when they dominated their opponents from the beginning (8-4, 16-12, 25-17). It seemed that France regained control in the third set, but a 19-17 lead was not enough. The Polish block proved too high for the French spikers, especially for Antonin Rouzier who didn’t find his way to overcome the strong Polish defense system (22-25). Poland continued their mode of success in the fourth set, finally out knocking their French rivals 3:1 after 96 minutes.

In Pool B, Estonia played against pre-favorite Russia for the opening match of the European Championships at the Abdi Ipekci Sports Hall in Istanbul. The match started with effective serves for both teams, but thanks to a series of successful attacks Estonia led the way at the first technical time-out (8:3). The guys from Tallinn surprisingly sped up the operations for an impressive 16:9 at the second break. With the score standing at 18:10 for the opponents, Italian-born and Russia’s head coach Daniele Bagnoli asked for a time-out in order to stop the silly mistakes that affected the performance of his players. Despite all their efforts, the Russians could not close up the gap in the score and backed up by their supporters the Estonians scored the first set at 25-20. Having contained the amnount of unforced mistakes, the Russians led the way in the second and third set, with Alexey Cheremisin well contributing to successfully end this section of the game. The Russians did not intend to risk a tie-break and started off the fourth set well motivated. The difference in terms of quality and physical skills separating these two teams was to be fully noticed and the match quickly ended at 25-15 for the Russian powerhouse. Estonian captain Kert Toobal said: “We played very well against one of the best teams in the world, late in the second set there was a wet floor and we lost a critical point, small details affected the result of the game”. Russian head coach Daniel Bagnoli concluded: “I hope we’ll play the whole tournament like we did in the second half of this game.”

In the last game of the day in Istanbul, the Netherlands overpowered Finland in a hard-fought five-setter 18-16.

The teams allocated to the 4 preliminary Pools shall compete following the principle “one against each other” in one single round. The teams classified 4th in each pool shall be automatically eliminated from the Final Round. The teams classified 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be qualified to the Playoff Pools E and F.
In the Playoff Pools (E and F), the teams will again compete “one against each other” in a single round, taking into account the fact that the results of the matches already played between the qualifications in the previous Pool will be counted towards the final ranking. The teams classified 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd in each playoff pool will be automatically eliminated from the Final Round. The first two teams classified in each Playoff Pool will qualify for the semi-finals.
The semi-finals and finals matches will then designate the new European champion.

The competition in Turkey will benefit from wide television coverage, established in close collaboration with the media partner of the European Volleyball Confederation, Infront Sports.

24 teams to Italy 2010

Complete list of World Championship 2010 participating teams is known. It’s been a long, exciting journey from the start of qualifiers for the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship way back on November 29, 2008.

But at the completion of the final three men’s qualifying tournaments this weekend, the wait is over to see who hosts Italy and defending champions Brazil will do battle with next September 24-October 10. On Sunday, the list of 24 teams was finally completed. As expected, Argentina ruled South American Pool A, easily booking their ticket at the expense of Colombia, Bolivia and Chile.

Things didn’t go quite as expected in Asia Pool H, however, as Iran managed to wrest one of two berths handed out on Sunday from Korea, who fell to 1-2 at the competition with a straight-sets loss to group winner Japan on the final day. Korea, which has appeared at seven of the last nine World Championships, was considered a favorite to advance along with Japan.

Iran (2-1) needed Japan to beat Korea on the final day in order to ensure their progress at the tournament. Iran head coach Hossein Madani was full of praise for the Japanese players after their storming victory over Korea, having expressed his hopes for a "fair match" earlier in the day. "I appreciate the Japanese players very much because they worked very hard and showed fair play. It was very difficult for me to watch the game, especially in the first set, but the Japanese players did their best. I appreciate the players, the coach and the fans of Japan."

Elsewhere on Sunday, Canada and Mexico advanced from the NORCECA Playoff Round in Guadalajara, Mexico at the expense of Dominican Republic and Panama. The Canadians swept through the group, winning all three matches without dropping a set, while Mexico qualified for its first World Championship appearance since 1982 by finishing with a 2-1 record.

In July, Puerto Rico became the first team to qualify for the Final Round in Italy. After that, the trickle turned into a flood.

Europe got the ball rolling when an undefeated Russia and Germany finished 1-2 in Pool I in Tampere, Finland in a third-round qualifying tournament that ended on August 9. The final six European spots were also filled on August 16, with Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Poland, France, Serbia and Spain all advancing on a hectic day of Volleyball activity around the globe.

In South America, Venezuela joined Brazil as one of three teams that will represent that continent at the Worlds. Venezuela beat Paraguay, Uruguay and Ecuador on home soil in Pool B.

On August 16, Tunisia became the first of three teams to qualify from Africa when it went unbeaten in Pool D against Algeria, Kenya and Mozambique. Egypt became the second team to qualify when it downed Nigeria on the final day of Pool C qualifying in Cairo on Friday. Cameroon snared the final berth by winning Pool E on home soil at the expense of South Africa, Mauritius and Zimbabwe.

The first of four teams from Asia to qualify also did so on August 16, when undefeated China and runner-up Australia advanced from Asia Pool G in Chengdu, China. Cuba joined Puerto Rico as a NORCECA representative in the Final Round on the same day, with the United States joining them 24 hours later.
