Only a couple of weeks before the start of the EuroVolley 2011 – where they will join Pool A in Vienna together with host Austria, Serbia and Turkey – the guys of Slovenia’s national team got third place in an international tournament, the 2011 Mikasa Cup, held this weekend at the “Lukna” sports hall in Maribor.
The final standings were topped by Iran, the Asian team which is being coached by legendary Julio Velasco. The tournament was also attended by the national teams of Finland and Slovakia which are also going to join the EuroVolley 2011 in Innsbruck and Prague respectively.
At the end of the round robin with two matches per day, Iran emerged as the final winner of the tournament, losing 2:3 to Finland but rallying past Slovakia and Slovenia in straight sets. Finland finished second, while Slovenia had to settle for third after losing to Iran. The standings were wound up by Slovakia, the winner of the 2011 CEV Volleyball European League finals in Kosice.
